Feels Like the First Time

This year as you may or may not know The Frozen Four for NCAA Hockey will be held at Consol Energy Center right here in Pittsburgh. This year the Frozen Four is very unique. Three out of the four teams (Quinnipiac, St. Cloud State and UMass-Lowell) are first timers to participate in The Frozen Four. The fourth team Yale has not made this far since 1952, before it was even called this.

“It’s exciting to know that somebody new is going to be a national champion, and everyone’s going into it with an even playing field,” UMass-Lowell head coach Norm Bazin said. “There’s going to be some new contender that’s going to take away the prize.”

During this tournament two of the three finalist for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award will be playing. This award is given to the player who is sought to be to be the best player in NCAA Division I hockey. Also this weekend all four of the coaches are amongst the seven finalist for The Spencer Penrose Award, which is awarded to the best coach each year.

West Regional champion Yale (20-12-3) entered this year’s NCAA tournament as the 16th and final seed, outlasting a mini-slump at the end of the regular season to rebound big in the tournament. So as you can see Yale is a major underdog in this event and have fought their way up to this position. East Regional champion Quinnipiac (29-7-5) is the on paper favorite to win it all.

With all of this excitement going on, this should make to be a very good tournament. We also have a very strong possibility of seeing a first time winner. All in all this should be a good event to watch.
